The Lincoln Park zoo features in one of the diamondanddoranmysteries as a place for a rendezvous and was one of the first zoos to be created in America. It was founded in 1868 on 35 acres of land and today is a zoo that has a huge variety of habitats and species it cares for, but it all began with a gift from New York City of two pairs of swans donated to Lincoln Park’s commissioners by Central Park’s commissioners.
The animal exhibits grew rapidly as the two pairs of swans were joined by peacocks, eagles, a couple of elk, wolves and even a puma, all donated by patrons. divert the monkeys at the zoo, he put a pig in their enclosure which made the monkeys happy but made the members of the Illinois Humane Society livid.
remains today one of Chicago’s best assets is down to his vim and vigor and his determination that the zoo should be a free attraction.
Today there are zoos all over the world doing great work of making animals safely accessible to the public without cruelty to the animals and working alongside conservation groups making it possible to preserve species for future generations through careful use of scientific methods that ensure the health and safety of all creatures in their care. But it is to pioneers like Cy DeVry and the Lincoln Park zoo that today’s zoos owe their existence.
